this is an idea of one of our shots, we are going to have our character putting up his hood. we have done some test shots and we felt a low angle shot captured the image very well. by the character having his hood up it builds up the suspense for "the chase"
this is a similar shot that we are also going to use, we will have the camera on the floor with a foot running right past the camera so it is almost a close up. we have also done test footage for this and thought it looked very good.
The feedback we got for our animatic was generally positive and useful. They said it was clear from the pictures what each shot was going to be. One problem how ever was that we had to explain that even though each shot was the same length on our animatic they would not be so in the actual filming so that was one critisisem of our animatic. The writing we had was also uselful in helping the viewer see what each shot was going to be.
The video for miss Independent is a mix between narrative and performance. The use of both conventions is very common in most music videos, its rare to have just performance or just narrative. The use of both conventions is very effective because it breaks up one another and this keeps it from being or becoming boring for the viewer. The performance is very good in this video and i think its key to show more then just the artist singing talents, as in this case the artist can show of his dancing ability. There are different camera angles and shots with are essential to keeping the video looking
As we did not get our first choice for the track we wanted to do, we decided that out of the other tracks that we are doing S.I.A- "Your My Flame" was the track that was best suited for us. The ideas that we had for the milkmaid video we will not be using. We thought that they would not go with the new genre of music.
The video will consist of two distictive parts. A chasing scene and a scene of dancing. It will start with a character being chased through Cambridge at night. The shots will be cut and shot so it looks like the character is being chased, when in actual fact he is just late for a dance lesson. The character will eventually come to the end of the chase, enter the dance studio and dance to the track.
We decided not to have a hybrid video this time and try to run two stories as the song is simple and doesn't warrant over comlicating with two stories, and keeping the video uncomplicated with a slight twist at the end just to make it stand out from most videos.
We have already chosen a ballet dancer that is prepared to do all the running and also the dancing. We think that by choosing ballet for the song then it adds a good contrast.
Filming: Cambridge city Centre, king street flats(stairways) to get high angle shots. Props - clock, hooded jaket/jumper, rucksack or gym bag, ballet/dance shoes. Times - Thursday 2nd October evening. the dance scene doesn't have to be filmed at night we can edit it so it looks like its on the same day as it is indoors in a dance studio. Filming needs to be done in the evening or night so that the idea of suspense and tension is hightend. The evening will give us opportunities to play with shadows etc so that we can get across to the audience the initial idea of someone being followed and chased. There will be varied shots from high angle long shots to low angled close ups. It is essential to the video that there are varied shots so it doesn't get boring for the viewer.
Richard Bragg student music video annalysis group:p1-03 getting away
the genre of the video is acoustic pop, its is clear straight away as the opening shot is of the artist playing the guitar. the shot is a close up of his fingers strumming the strings. when the singing starts to break in the camera zooms out from the artists strings and focuses on his mouth, the lypsinc is very accurate and in time. from then on wards it becomes a narrative but also has a little performance however the main idea of it is to be a narrative with as the narraive actors can't see the peformer
As we did not get our first choice of song we recieved a second CD which included 15 new tracks. We prefered other songs to what we chose but to make a sucsesfull music video we decided that Sia- you're my flame would be the easiet as it has a slow tempo and ope lyrics tha can be interpreted in many ways. we annalysed the origonal video which we rated very highly As you can see the video has little relevance to the lyrics. this inspired us to do a slightly irrelative video aswell.
Sia - You're my flame Lyrics
You take a stroll into the morning sun You make a Happy Meal a portion for one
You steal the wallet of a man with a gun You make this seem like a whole lot of fun Yeah you do
You'll make new shapes with your hands on a wall You're driving a nail while you're taking a call You wouldn't care if you had nothing at all Instead of chasing the dream You're just chasing a ball Yeah you are
You're just dodging all the friendly fire You're never dressed in the right attire You miss the start of every game You're my flame
You make hay when the sun don't shine You don't need a dollar, you don't need a dime You burn at both ends yet still you're fine You're my flame
Teach me to haggle I'll teach you to swim Get right back on the saddle Push me on a swing
Take me to Rio I'll take you to Berlin I'll give you some yarn And you'll give it some spin Yes you will
Now you're sitting sure, yes, in an old tree You've tied our legs, and so now we have three You dip your toes into the ice cold sea I see your reflection, your reflection is me Yes I am
You're just dodging all the friendly fire You're never dressed in the right attire You miss the start of every game You're my flame
You make hay when the sun don't shine You don't need a dollar, you don't need a dime You burn at both ends yet still you're fine You're my flame
This is the official video for Kid Harpoons song "Milk Maid"
We thought that the video was very poor for the style of music. It was very much a performance based video but shot in the woods which i think didnt work very well.
Pitch- We have chosen to create a music video for "Milk Maid" by Kid Harpoon. We have decided that our video will be hybrid, involving performance and a narrative, the performance will take place on the back of a milk float in order to add a slight artistic twist to the video. This will be filmed from behind in a following car as the milk float will be moving. We will also have a fixed camera on the milk float in order to get some close-ups to cut into. The narrative will be the daily routine taken by a young girl as she gets out of bed. Both scenes will lead up to a meeting at the door of the female and the band where one of the band members hand over a bottle of milk to bring to end the video.
As a group we have decided that none of us will star in the video and that we will employ the band and an actor in order to make the performance more believable as the band can learn the song and what they apperear to be playing would match up to the song, unlike if us as a group were doing it. And also gives us a chance to get the performance just how we want in through direction.
The feed back from our pitch to the class was as follows....
"A good pitch which evidenced strong ideas, particularly about mise-en-scene ( the use of the milk float as a stage). A lot of further thought needs putting into the style of the video in terms of editing, camera shots etc. Although you did not get the track you wanted I think this strong idea could be used as an abstract representation of another song. Well Done!"
We thought the pitch went really well. A bit more time could of helped us in order to get the track that we wanted. As a group we thought that the milk float was a good idea but have decided that we wont be using it for the new video.

Milkmaid - Kidharpoon
Lyrics:
Here comes the milkmaid with her firm shoulders and the attitude of Caesar for one so disposable she's never been that way inclined. Her hands are strong like the night we all sung her song.
Through the day, the night confides in her, her pales are filled with stars, fallen from the sky. She day dreams, the day that she leaves, to become an actress, the milmaid superstar. And her hands are strong like the night, we all sung her song.
Her father long since gone, left her with nothing, to live upon. But a brother too young to learn. A mother too old to work. The milkmaid goes on.
Here comes the milkmaid with her, firm shoulders and the attitude of Caesar for one so disposable she's never been that way inclined.
Then one night a show came through town, the milkmaid in the crowd, was standing out. A director took her hand, I undertand you'd like to act, her made her try, for a part, she tried with all her heart and she left with the show and a leading part.
The days and nights became weightless and she became a great actress. Like the stars in the sky, and her hands stayed strong like the night she sung her song
This is the story of the Milkmaid with her firm shoulders an the attitude of Caesar for one so disposable she's never been that way inclined. Her hands are strong and tonight we sing this song
