Due to the use of a actor/ dancer in our music video it has become increasingly hard to find time that we both have free. This has then meant that we have been unable to carry on any progress with our music video. We are planing to film the narrative section of our music video during the week, this consists of shots of our actor running through town as if he is being chased. We are hoping to get as much footage as possible during the evening so we are able to get desant shots that we can edit into our music video and use for our final video.
We presented our Rough Cut to the class yesterday the feedback was mainly possitive. People thought that although the video looked quite unprofessional it suited the style of the music, likening it to the video for "Praise You" by Fatboy Slim---->
Also they commented on the lack of mise en scene also, saying that they would advise taking the action outside the dance studio to give the audience something more interesting to view.
With this video, created by some students for there music video follows many of the traditional conventions of a music video. There is a strong sense of performance and as well as inter cutting the performance with narrative, it is also happening around the performance. The shots are very well cut with the beat and the change in tempo is reflected well with the pace of the action. The shots used also maximize the amount of people that are available to create the audience, the use of close-up and low angle shots creates the illusion of more people. I think the main thing that makes this video a success is the lighting used, the empty car park with the bright street lamps contrasts brilliantly with the pitch black of the sky. Also the lighting used when the crowd is dance, achieved probably with just a torch is really effective in creating a sense of movement when they are dancing. The performances were on the whole good, the crowd worked well and the band also performed well, engaging the audience well. However the lip syncing was not too clear and hard to decipher due to not enough movement. However on the whole a very professional looking video that really capitalizes on available equipment.
Moving to new york video by the Wombats uses many different conventions including narrative and performance. The Wombats being very much Indie pop group, like to focus and draw the attention of the audience to their talent, therefore many shots in the video are of them playing there instruments, which makes it a very sucsesful performance video. The lyrics in the song go very well with the video for example they sing " I put one foot forward, and ended up thirty yards back" which they show in the video by amplifing it and not making it compleatly literal. Voyeurism and wating is used alot in many parts during the video. They show people watching the perfromance its self with in the video, which draws the adience in. The use of close ups in the video help to sell the artist and premot his style which is Indie. Using things like central framing and change of costume changes between help more to sell the artists albums. The editing in the video is very good it constantly changes between the narrative and perfromance, which always keeps the viewer watching. As the song speeds up and changes to the courus the editing inturn gets quicker from shot to shot. The use of the hamster growing to become a huge hamster makes it very unusal and serreal which i think helks the video.
The target audience for are new song is different to that of the milk maid. The new song your my flame by sia,i say would have more of a niche target audience due to its genre. Due to the genre of music the video doesn't follow traditional music conventions this also makes it harder to focus to a Pacific target audience.
This is a screen grab of the program that we used to edit the test footage to show the lighting that we are trying to acheive in the dance scene. We only used a OHP to create the lighting and the effect was OK. We have managed to secure some proffessional lights that should give us more of a stylised look.
